The Center for Student Support currently consists of the Director of Student Support and our guidance counselor. This team provides the coordination to ensure that all students receive the help they need to achieve academic, personal and social success.
Faculty and administration continuously monitor students' progress and try to provide support and assistance to students in a timely fashion to head off academic problems.
Academic supports include: academic workshops, held every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. for students on academic probation. Students can receive additional assistance from peers, teachers and volunteer tutors. In addition, students have the opportunity to work on computer programs designed to assist them with both skills and content knowledge.
Saturday tutoring is available as well as Summer School. Ninety-six of our students participated in our summer school program to increase their academic achievement in humanities, reading/writing and math.
In Advisory, students work with a staff member to bring their "Not Yet Proficient" grades up to the "Proficient" level.
YWLCS operates a school-based health clinic in partnership with the University of Illinois at Chicago Neighborhoods Initiative Division of Community Health. Clinic services are provided by a full-time family nurse practitioner and nurse's assistant, a part-time dietician and a part-time clinical psychologist, supervised by a Board-certified pediatrician.
Our school-based health clinic was renovated this summer for the start of our sixth academic year. The clinic renovation was funded by grants from the McKesson Foundation and Grant Healthcare Foundation.
