College and Career Counseling

In Senior Academy (grades 11-12), the College Prep seminar plays an important role in preparing students for their life after high school graduation. Students are encouraged to do a lot of self-examination as they navigate their Junior year. They are exposed to many resources that will make the process of decision making a little bit easier. The course requires a considerable amount of independent work and study.

Through the course of the year, class assignments, journal writings, and participation help students to address the following questions:

Trimester I: Who am I? How do the habits I am developing now help or get in the way for my future?

Trimester II: What do I need to improve in order to be successful?

Trimester III: How do I go about doing it? What are some of the tools I need?

Work in this seminar includes:

College Prep Portfolio: The portfolio is worked on throughout the Junior year

Weekly Journal Writings: Each week students are assigned a journal writing question/topic. These journal writings are going to be modeled after college application questions

`

Homework: A variety of assignments will be given that can range from reading chapters of various books, completing handouts, using Internet tools, and attending occasional field trips.

College Visits: A monthly calendar is posted at the Internship/College Prep bulletin board throughout the school year. In addition, school profiles with their websites are posted in the College Resource Center so students can decide which visits they want to attend. All college visits take place on Wednesday afternoons at 3:30 pm. Students are required to attend a minimum of 2 per month. Attendance at additional visits is considered as extra credit points.
